Who takes the PNLE, and who administers it?
Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduates take the PNLE to practice as registered nurses in the Philippines; R.A. 9173 requires every applicant for a nursing license to pass it. The Professional Regulatory Board of Nursing gives the exam under the Professional Regulation Commission.
PNLE exam format
- Five subjects, Nursing Practice I to V, each with 100 items in the current PRC Tables of Specifications.
- Taken over two consecutive days, with 2 hours for each subject in PRC's published exam program.
- Passing requires a general average of at least 75% with no subject rating below 60% (R.A. 9173, Section 15).
PNLE requirements
Under Section 13 of R.A. 9173, applicants must be Filipino citizens (or citizens of a country with reciprocity), of good moral character, and holders of a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from a school that meets government-recognized nursing education standards. Documentary requirements are set by PRC and can change between cycles.
PNLE Subjects: NP1–NP5
The PNLE is divided into five Nursing Practice subjects. These are the official PRC subject titles under Board of Nursing Resolution No. 10 (s. 2025).
- NP I — Care of Individuals, Families, Population Groups and Community (Community Health Nursing).
- NP II — Care of Mother, Adolescent (Well Clients), At Risk or With Problems (Acute & Chronic); Human Growth and Development.
- NP III — Care of Clients with Problems in Surgery, Oxygenation, Fluid and Electrolytes, Infectious, Inflammatory and Immunologic Response, Cellular Aberrations (Acute and Chronic).
- NP IV — Care of Client with Problems in Nutrition, and Gastro-Intestinal, Metabolism and Endocrine. Perception and Coordination (Acute and Chronic).
- NP V — Care of Clients with Maladaptive Patterns of Behavior (Acute and Chronic); Care of Clients with Life-Threatening Condition, Acutely Ill/Multi-Organ Problems, High Acuity and Emergency Situation.
